5 Ayurvedic Tips to Keep Your Thyroid Healthy

The thyroid gland produces hormones that help to regulate body function. When the thyroid gland is not working effectively, it can cause many adverse health symptoms, such as fatigue, extremely dry skin, thinning hair, anxiety, and aches, and a host of other symptoms.

Thyroid and Mental Health

January is Thyroid Awareness Month. According to Prime Revival Institute, "The dysfunction of the thyroid gland results in mood changes. It significantly impacts one’s mood and mental health. With hyperthyroidism, the symptoms range from anxiety, nervousness, and irritability.

Whereas the symptoms of hypothyroidism are depression and unusual tiredness. Generally, the effect of thyroid dysfunction on mental health is severe. People face concentration issues, and memory issues and often experience brain fog or reduced alertness. The aim of Thyroid Awareness Month is to help people understand the condition and learn ways to cope with the impact it has on mental health."

Ayurveda can bring the body's doshas back into balance, which can support healthy thyroid function.

Clients often report that they have normal thyroid labs and yet they experience symptoms. There are two items to review. First, what labs were run? Often providers run TSH, yet to see what is happening in the cascade, T4, T3 and TSH are helpful in seeing the whole picture.

Ayurveda has effective herbal remedies to support healthy conversion of thyroid hormone. Secondly, TSH range is wide. So, one may have a "normal" TSH, but still be symptomatic. Also, what feels correct for one person, may not feel correct to another. Optimal and normal are not the same.

Reducing Stress Helps to Heal and Optimize Thyroid Function

When you're feeling stressed, your body produces a hormone called cortisol. Having too much of this hormone in your body can keep the thyroid from functioning properly. When your stress levels are high, it's difficult for your body to produce the thyroid hormones that it needs.

With Ayurveda, you can find ways to manage your stress and stay calm even when your life is hectic. It's not always possible to remove stressors from our lives, but there are ways to make that stress easier to deal with. Ayurveda can help you to find the calm your body needs.

Ayurvedic Diet to Support Healthy Thyroid

Through an Ayurvedic consultation, one learns their unique doshic picture and from that, learns to eat correctly for them. When this occurs, food becomes medicine.

The foods we eat serve as fuel for our body and food. The thyroid requires nutrients in order to function properly. If your diet is deficient in these vitamins and minerals, it could have an impact on your thyroid function. A nourishing Ayurvedic diet can give you more energy and help your entire body to function properly.

Iodine is key to thyroid function, as are B-complex vitamins. Dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains can all have a positive impact on your health. Try to eat fewer processed foods and more whole foods. A few changes to your diet can leave you feeling much healthier.

Support Your Thyroid Through Exercise

Thyroid disorders can cause muscle weakness and fatigue, which means you may not have the motivation to exercise. However, exercise can be a great way to regulate thyroid function, especially if you're suffering from an underactive thyroid.

If you're struggling with thyroid symptoms, intense workouts may not be a good fit for you. Instead, you should focus on low-impact exercises that won't put a lot of stress on your muscles and joints. Yoga and Tai chi can also be highly beneficial to your health.

Thyroid and Dry Eyes

According to the Cleveland Clinic, "Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an eye disorder that causes inflammation (swelling) and damage to the tissues around the eye, including muscles, fatty tissue and connective tissue. TED is an autoimmune condition, or one that happens because your protective immune system attacks your body."
