What is Ayurveda and Why Does it Work So Well?

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that translates directly as the “knowledge” (veda) of “life” (ayu). Ayurveda is a branch of the Vedic tradition - an ancient Indian knowledge system, and the oldest wisdom tradition in the world - which is based on the idea that all of life, from the mundane to the majestic, is inherently connected and divine

Ayurveda is often thought of as only one component: Ayurvedic medicine. While Ayurveda is a profound approach to holistic health and healing, this is just one small dot on the vast map of this ancient tradition. Ayurveda is a path, a system of living, a spiritual journey that lasts a lifetime.

Ayurveda uses food as medicine, herbs, and lifestyle practices like meditation and breathwork to balance the dynamic energies within our body – creating harmony throughout our inner and outer worlds.

Green Juice Recipe for Vata

Ayurvedic Green Juices for Vata can be nourishing.

Handful of Spinach 3-4 leaves of Swiss chard or tender young spinach 1-2 lemon cucumber (remove seeds) Lemon wedge 1/2 hunk of ginger root 1 apple or pear Pinch of cinnamon.

Vata tends to have a more delicate digestive system. Juices should be taken only during peak summer heat, in moderation and the amount taken is best limited to a small glass full. To further fine tune green juice for Vata, use half juice and half hot water. To mitigate the energetic coolness of the veggies, a good strong hunk of ginger root and cinnamon is needed.

Process the ingredients through your juicer. After processing, skim off any foam at the top of the blend. Combine 1 part juice with 1-part warm water before serving.

Green Juice Recipe for Pitta

Ayurvedic Green Juices for Pitta can be cooling.

3-5 leaves of kale, dandelion greens, Swiss chard, beet greens, or spinach 2 Lebanese cucumbers 1-2 celery stalks, the darker green the celery the better-check local grower’s market Fresh peppermint leaves to taste Wedge of lime 1 Beet (Chioggia and golden beet are lovely options) 1 Teaspoon of aloe vera gel (optional)

Pitta people are prone to inflammation, loose stool, and high acidity. Dark leafy greens, such as kale, spinach, beet greens, and Swiss chard, have an alkaline rating of +8.0 and above and are especially cooling leafy greens.

Beets support healthy bile. The liver is a Pitta organ and Pitta dosha has a tendency for bile to become thick and congested. This recipe can be diluted with water. Pitch the foam.
